Many hits and many questions
Launched in June 1998 this site welcomes many visitors, often receiving 9,000 or more hits in a single day. Thousands of these visitors have enquiries, questions and requests for information, most of which arrive by email.Do you have a question?
Please review this page as well as the following information before emailing questions to me. The answer to your question may already be somewhere here on this site. This site is completely funded and produced by me in my spare time, as a hobby that has become more interesting and time consuming than ever anticipated! Remember, there is ONLY me to respond to queries. When I do respond, I usually have to be brief. Don't be surprised or offended if I respond with a web address rather than a proper letter.
LIMITATIONS 1. Advice about clients
Some of the questions received that relate to the diagnosis and management of individual clients, are inappropriate, and "unanswerable" by me for ethical reasons (see DISCLAIMER), remembering that ALL speech-language pathology intervention is based on face to face assessment. I don't do "Internet diagnosis" or treatment! Beware of anyone who does.
Some questions relating to diagnosis and clinical management may be perfectly appropriate, but "unanswerable" because they are beyond my expertise and I simply do not know the answer! There is a page here that gives visitors an indication of the speech and language pathology topics that I might know something about.
2. Questionnaires & interviews
Students undertaking fact-finding projects about speech-language pathology as a career: I cannot provide individual responses to the many surveys, "interviews" and questionnaires I receive. There simply isn't enough time in an average week to attend to them all. I don't think you will be disappointed if you look at this information for your answers: SLP Career 1 and SLP Career 2
3. Assignments, projects
Students, please don't even think about asking me to do your assignments for you! I will not answer lists of questions such as (this is the one I receive most frequently from TAFE and Community Colleges):
1. what are the professional responsibilities of a speech pathologist and to whom are they responsible? 2. How can their qualifications be authenticated ? 3. Do clients need referrals? 4. Where do they work? 5. What academic training and work experience must speech pathologists have to be qualified ? [List the sources of information].
The answers to these questions vary from state to state, and from country to country. Do your own finding out, relative to the setting you have to be knowledgeable about. There are a few leads here.
4. Job seekers
I do not provide information to SLPs seeking employment. Please do not write to me asking for "openings" in various countries. I do not have "contacts" or appropriate information in this regard. There is a page here that may provide a starting point for you.
5. Complaints
There is NOTHING I can say, or want to say, in response to reports of unsatisfactory conduct or case management on the part of members of my profession, service providers, and agencies.
Please do not write to me about insurance companies. There is nothing I can do.
Please do not send me SLP reports, language samples, audiograms, IEP documents, or copies of ANY professional correspondence for comment.
Please do not complain to me about professional associations, or their procedures. I will not forward such complaints to the agencies concerned or enter any discussions on your behalf.
6. Australia
Bear in mind that I am in Australia (here), and that Australia is a VERY BIG island! There are lots of things I don't know about speech pathology and related services around the country.
My knowledge of services in other countries is very superficial. Use the the SLP 'Start Page' as a launching pad for your own regional searches.
SCOPE
That takes care of all the things I won't do, don't do, or don't do very well, and the information you will not find here on this site. Look at the SITE MAP to see what is here.
