Any suggestions...anyone?
Caroline, Just discovered your interesting and down to earth web site. I'm an SLP (in the US) in the PS serving the 3-5 population. About 90% of my work involves assessment and conferencing. I spend some time in direct intervention too. At this point, the biggest difficulty involves complaints colleges regarding the amount of time recommended for therapy. Indiana has no case load limits. Many of my co-workers are facing huge caseloads in addition to the little ones that I send them. Do you or anyone else have suggestions for the immediate problem. There are some issues that cannot be solved in the present structure. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest...SLP

RESPONSE: That's tough
and it's beyond me!

Looking for a speech-language pathologist
I am looking for speech / language help for my 6 year old boy. We live in Queens, New York and hope that you might have some knowledge of an accredited institution that can help. I think the first step is to have him evaluated to determine what is the nature/root of his delayed language development. Please if you do not know of any in the immediate area some direction as to other sources of help would be greatly appreciated.

RESPONSE:
Use the ASHA Search Engine to find a Certified SLP in your part of the USA or Canada.

Articulation (and other) therapy ideas
I'm a school-based SLP (B.S.) working on master's degree in early childhood special education. After 10 years of traveling and doing articulation therapy, I have hit burnout and need new ideas that are not going to cost me $$$!. Thanks for the site.

RESPONSE: Sites...
It is difficult to find practical, interesting and theoretically sound FREE speech-language pathology procedures and activities on the Internet. Materials that are available commercially are often (but definitely not always) of doubtful value clinically and poorly supported (if at all) theoretically.

As stated in the disclaimer, all speech-language pathology intervention is based on individual assessment. And  all speech-language pathology activities need to be individualised for each and every client by a qualified SLP, or by a student who is being supervised by such an SLP. There is no such thing as do-it-yourself or one-size-fits-all speech therapy! That does not mean that parents, family members and others don't come up with brilliant ideas for implementing therapy. They do! You might find something here: tips, ideas and freebies.

Minimal pairs
I am an SLP in --- USA.  I found your minimal pair word lists very useful.  Do you have a picture library for these minimal pairs?  Do you know of any pictured minimal pairs available on the internet? Thanks for your time.

RESPONSE: Pictures
Glad you like the word lists! There is a good assortment of them in the Black Sheep Press range which is available on CD-rom, and some free ones here and here. Like all minimal contrast compilations it will not be 100% applicable for every regional variant of spoken English.

Nuffield Programme
How do I obtain a copy of the 3rd edition (2004) of the Nuffield Centre Dyspraxia Programme?

RESPONSE: go to...
The Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme 3rd Edition 2004 Web Site. You can order it from the publisher:

The Miracle Factory (NDP 2004)
PO Box 2000
Windsor

Orthodontic devices to correct lisps
Hi! I am a speech-language pathologist working in the schools. I was wondering what you know about orthodontic devises for correction of lisping. From what I understand, they are not very effective, but I'm seeking out more information. Please let me know your input on the subject.

RESPONSE: Hmmm...
I thought orthodontic appliances were used to "straighten" teeth. I don't know anything about their application in remediating lisps, and cannot find anything in the research literature. But it is an interesting question and a lot of people ask me about it. CB

Itchy feet
Dr Bowen. I am a speech and language therapist working in Scotland. I work with community paediatrics and acquired adult neurological disorders. I am keen to expand my interests in Australia and was wondering if you may have the website address for the professional body of SLT / SLPs in Australia.

RESPONSE: Speech Pathology in Australia

Therapy resources on the Internet
Love reading your articles-specifically on phonological therapy.  I have been a practicing speech-language pathologist for over 25 years and used to utilize the traditional method of "articulation" therapy.  Request input from you as to where on the internet I can gather info on phonological therapy ideas  to collaborate and use with preschool children (head start) and older children.  In addition any language enrichment activities (games, etc.) to use with other "disorders" Thanks

RESPONSE: phonologicaltherapy listserv
There is information here about the phonologicaltherapy list (discussion group) and web site. When you join the list, sign up for a Yahoo! ID and password, so that you can access all the child speech resources in the message archive, links area, files area, and so on.

Tongue-tie
I am a school speech language pathologist, and have a 5th grader with a very restricted lingual frenulum. It appears to impact his speech as much of his articulation is rapid and imprecise. In addition, he stutters. His caregiver is under the impression, after speaking with her dentist, that he needs to get his tongue clipped and his stuttering will be cured.  Knowing that stuttering occurs at the level of the vocal folds, I know it is not so simple. Not being a medical based SLP I am curious about who I should refer him to see regarding if he should have surgery. Should it be an ENT?  All the literature focuses on surgery for young children. Is a frenectomy performed often on an older child? Any advice you could give me on this matter would be much appreciated as this child's core meeting is coming up, and I want to do what's right for him. Thank you

RESPONSE: Tongue-tie assessment
I suggest that you consult with an SLP near you regarding a face-to-face second opinion for this boy, and then follow his/her suggestions regarding referral to a surgeon. Choose an SLP who is experienced with tongue tie. Here in Australia (I am in Sydney) lingual frenectomy is usually performed by plastic surgeons, particularly those who specialise in palate and other craniofacial surgery. Sometimes it is done by general surgeons and ENTs. The surgery is most commonly performed on under fives, but is also performed on older children and adults. Carmen Fernando's book is very informative (see here).

Working in Australia
Hello! I live in the United States but want to find a job as an SLP in Australia.  I don't have a location preference.  I am having a difficult time finding contacts or even job postings.  Would you please send any information that you may have that may be helpful to help me find a job? Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Hi. I live in the US and want to work in Australia as an SLP. How do you subscribe to an Australian paper to see the job adverts?  And, do you have any suggestions of towns I should investigate to live in?  I am a single white female, 24 yrs. old and of course am mostly concerned about my safety.  I trust your suggestions and opinions and any advice you could offer about geographical location would be wonderful. Thanks a million for your help.
