Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme
3rd Edition 2004
Speechwoman has been using the Nuffield Centre
Dyspraxia Programme since 1985, and she is extremely excited about the
latest version. You can download an order form
from this site, and send it to the publisher. The babe intends to keep an
eye on this embryonic web site, and looks forward to the promised sections
of the site that include: frequently asked questions, background
information about the programme, links, and information for parents.
Note that the
following review relates to the NDP 2004 Web Site, and not to the
programme itself - which is, of course, a little ripper!
[RIPPER:
Adj. excellent; rip snorter; ridgy-didge.]

Indigenous
Australians and Hearing
This is a page on the Australian Hearing site.
Australian Hearing provides government funded hearing services for
eligible Indigenous Australians. This excellent site includes NAL
research and a link to the NAL
(National Acoustic Laboratories) web site. NAL is funded by the
Commonwealth Government of Australia to undertake scientific
investigations into hearing, hearing habilitation and rehabilitation, and
the prevention of hearing loss. NAL is the research division of Australian
Hearing, a statutory body attached to the Commonwealth Department of
Health and Ageing. |

Voice
Academy
Vocal problems are common — about 10-20% of all
children and 7% of all adults have voice disorders at any given time. The
incidence for teachers alone is higher — about 15%. In fact (brace
yourself!) according to a study cited on the Voice
Academy site, teachers are 32 times more likely than individuals in
other professions to be dogged by persistent and incapacitating voice
difficulties. |

| Amazed
by this statistic, Speechwoman could not wait to sign up for free
membership and a whirlwind tour of this fascinating interactive site,
complete with audio samples, videos, and animations. The site includes a
text only version,
a comprehensive glossary of voice related terms, an outstandingly good section for SLPs leading
in service events for teachers, a Media Kit, and a great FAQ - all aimed at teachers keeping their voices in fine fettle.
Speechwoman, conserving her
voice, is curbing an impulse to holler, "Sign up today!
You will be able to
follow all the links above once you've completed the free registration
process.

Alliance
for Childhood: Fool's Gold: Computers in Early Childhood [SPANISH]
"...Computers are
reshaping children's lives, at home and at school, in profound and
unexpected ways. Common sense suggests that we consider the potential
harm, as well as the promised benefits, of this change..." and
"...Children need stronger personal bonds with caring adults. Yet
powerful technologies are distracting children and adults from each
other...".
This is a very interesting report on a site that includes
an article on the
importance of play in the 0 to 5 age-range, and links
to a selection of other fascinating and thought-provoking
sites. Don't miss children
and computers: a call for action and outlines of the Alliance for
Childhood's projects.
To gain
a third + for "authority" Speechwoman would like to see the
addition to the site of a a detailed reference bibliography citing the
evidence-base.

Principles
of Human Neuropsychology: Research Links
This is a web site from McGraw-Hill
Higher Education, providing links from "Language", Chapter 6 of
Principles of Human Neuropsychology by G. Dennis Rains, Kutztown
University of Pennsylvania. The chapter overview is here
and there are flashcards
too for this and every chapter! Use the drop-down menu on the left of your
browser to explore all 15 chapters and the epilogue. There are a few too
many dead links among the treasures on this
links
page, but it is worth persisting, and the rest of the book is easy to
navigate definitely repays exploration. |

The Tutorials Home links to presentations for families, including
children, about the topics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,
asthma, cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate, chronic constipation and
encopresis in children, and gastro oesophageal reflux. Easy to navigate,
well written, and strong on the facts - this page on the University of
Virginia Health System site is a winner! While on the site, check out the craniofacial
anomalies page and the neurological
disorders page, among many others of interest. |

Frequently
prescribed medications and their effects on voice and speech
The National Center for Voice and Speech is a Division of The Denver
Center for the Performing Arts and a Center at The University of Iowa.
Smitten by Pavarobotti,
Speechwoman has presented her award to those at the NCVS
responsible for this helpful list of over 200 frequently prescribed
medications, and their effects, if any, on voice and speech.
Interestingly, about half of the top 200 prescribed medications have
neither adverse nor beneficial effects on voice or speech production. It
is noted that a medication's effect on voice and speech may vary greatly
from person to person due to dissimilar dosages, duration of use, and
individual differences. |

The Canadian
Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) /
Association canadienne des orthophonistes et audiologistes (ACOA) is
undergoing a remarkable transformation. Information about the professions,
available in French
and English provides
a good starting point for newcomers to the site, where you will also find
helpful pages for students,
career
guidance and links,
a resource
centre, membership
information, merchandise
and a private members' area. Very nice CASLPA-ACOA! |
