DECEMBER 2006
Stuttering Information for Preschool Teachers
Speechwoman began 2006 by recognising an excellent student project
devoted to adolescents who stutter. A team of clever and creative
web-weavers at
LaTrobe University have caught her eye again with a nice, neat,
navigable and
no-nonsense web site for preschool teachers and child care workers
needing
plain-English, high quality information about little people who have
fluency concerns.
The site was produced as part of a final year Bachelor of Speech
Pathology project
by Katherine Anderson, Tania Attard, Rachael Barringer, Alison
Ferraro and Zoe King,
guided by Dr. Susan Block. Coming as she does from another planet,
and with her
tendency to dream up jobs for other people, Speechwoman wondered
whether there
were plans afoot to develop translations into community languages of
some of the
resources, such as the very good PowerPoint, FAQ and Checklist. |

Clinical Decision
Making with Linguistically Diverse Learners
GONE
This interactive web-based portal is designed
to support speech-language
pathologists (SLPs) who provide clinical service to children who are
linguistically
diverse. It takes just a few minutes to fill out brief registration
details in return
for a user name and password to access the site's
four
specific learning
components which are password protected
here. Speechwoman was so excited
about this amazing resource that she nearly sprained her typing
finger bringing it
to you. Smiling bravely,
the
babe commented, "Sure it was tough, but worth
sacrificing a fingernail - even if only for the pleasure of finding
this on the
links
page". What a trooper! |

OCTOBER 2006
Targets and Activities Project
(TAP) The UK-based Targets and Activities Project (TAP) website has been
set up to
allow
Speech and Language Therapists, Language and Communication Teachers
and others
to share ideas with those working with children with communication
difficulties in
schools and other locations. On the TAP site are activities sheets
for
working with
children at a variety of different levels and across a variety of
curriculum
and skill
areas. The site uses the P-scales and the lower levels from the
National
Curriculum
as a means for organising these documents in a way which should make
them easy
to find. These documents use a simple standardised format to make
them
easy and
quick to read. TAP sheets are especially designed to be used by
education
staff -
such as learning support assistants - who have had guidance from the
appropriate
specialist. |

RSF Earthspeak
The EARTHSPEAK
people build parent speech training
programs that aim to complete the
job that cleft palate surgery begins. Parents and other lay
people, irrespective of their literacy levels, are taught to help
their children gain a quality of life previously unavailable to them
in a range of countries outside the industrialised world. Visit
their informative web site for details of week-long Corrective
Babbling speech camps for parent and child teams, where parents are
taught how to follow a step-by-step program outlined for them in a
training manual in their native language. Impressively, EARTHSPEAK
reports that most teams
complete the program successfully in from four to nine months. |
