Caroline Bowen PhD - Child Speech Assessments / Second Opinions
SPEECH PATHOLOGY PRACTICE
Caroline Bowen PhD, CPSP
SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST
Children's Speech Sound Disorders
SPEECH ASSESSMENTS AND CHILD SPEECH SECOND OPINIONS

Dr Caroline Bowen has some 40 years of clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist working with children with a range of communication challenges and their families, and now:

  • Specialises in children’s speech sound disorders.

  • Performs ‘second opinion’ assessments for speech pathologist colleagues, providing follow-up intervention guidance, support and case discussion for treating speech pathologists, and home management advice for families.

  • Conducts assessments (not necessarily second opinions) in cases of speech sound disorder and late talking and provides short-term intervention advice for clients from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Is particularly interested in late-talking toddlers, children with suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech, children with phonological disorders, and children whose speech progress is slow.

She also presents Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events for speech-language pathologists, and guest lectures for various organisations. Please click here for more information about CPD events by Caroline Bowen. Scroll down this page to read more about assessments for children with speech difficulties.

Consultancy and collaboration

Since 1994 Dr Caroline Bowen's clinical practice has included a consultancy service to fellow speech-language pathologists locally, interstate and internationally, providing expert opinions in cases of moderate, severe and/or persisting speech sound disorders. The fee for this service is met by the child's family at the time of consultation. Children have come from the local area and throughout Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, South East Asia and the Pacific, the UK and the US.

In providing these assessments Caroline prefers to communicate with each child's treating speech-language pathologist. About two thirds of second opinions are initiated by treating speech pathologists with questions about diagnosis and management, and the remaining third by parents, care-givers, medical practitioners and occasionally teachers.

Assessments for children with speech difficulties
UNINTELLIGIBLE / HARD-TO-UNDERSTAND SPEECH. DELAYED / DISORDERED SPEECH DEVELOPMENT
Speech assessments are conducted over one or two face-to-face sessions, with parents observing, and their aim is to provide a provisional diagnosis (or diagnosis if possible), facilitate appropriate referrals if indicated, and give short-term management advice to families. Second opinions for children with speech sound disorders
PERSISTING ARTICULATION DISORDERS / PHONOLOGICAL DISORDERS / CHILDHOOD APRAXIA OF SPEECH
Second opinion assessments are conducted over one, two or three face-to-face sessions, with parent(s) observing, and their aim is to provide a review of diagnosis, a written report, as well as intervention suggestions and follow-up collaboration with treating speech pathologists if wanted.
